For years, because of prostitution and drug trafficking, Intendente was seen as a place to avoid. Since the financial crisis, though, it has become one of the hippest neighborhoods of Lisbon, attracting people for its multicultural food options, open-air dance contests, movie screenings and concerts. Many old buildings in the area have been restored but have preserved their original facades — most of them covered in azulejos, traditional Portuguese tiles.
Meet Catarina Fernandes Martins
Catarina has lived in Lisbon since 2008. She’s from a small town in the east of Portugal, which fostered an early desire to travel the world. She has yet to find a light she finds as magical as Lisbon’s.
