According to the congressman’s office, Emily Clyburn, a longtime librarian, civil rights advocate, and wife of Rep. Jim Clyburn, the highest-ranking African American member of Congress, passed away in 2019 at the age of 80.
While attending what was then South Carolina State College in 1960, Emily and Jim—the House majority whip—met while serving time for taking part in a civil rights march.
Additionally, Clyburn finished her education at Atlanta University and the University of South Carolina, where she graduated in 1977 with a Master of Library Science.
In 2010, SCSC conferred on her an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Before spending 29 years as a medical librarian at the Charleston Naval Base and the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, Emily Clyburn worked as a public school librarian in Charleston and Columbia.
